Armory Center for the Arts

Fund: $45,000

The Armory Center for the Arts will present how we are in time and space: Nancy Buchanan, Marcia Hafif, Barbara T. Smith, an exhibition shaped by the forces of proximity, friendship, generosity, and longevity, curated by Michael Ned Holte. The three artists met in the newly formed MFA program at the University of California, Irvine, all graduating in 1971. While working in a wide variety of modes and media, each artist has followed a singular trajectory, while often curiously overlapping, like a Venn diagram made from three circles. This exhibition is intended to reveal the remarkable range of these three individual artists, while also highlighting empathic instances of overlap through drawing, video, performance, and architectural proposals over 50 years of art making. Over the course of the exhibition, artists such as Neha Choksi, Patricia Fernandez, Kang Seung Lee, Babsi Loisch, Jennifer Moon, Matt Siegle, Tashi Wada, and Jennifer West will be invited to respond to one or more specific works by Buchanan, Hafif, or Smith, resulting in a parallel program of performances, talks, workshops, and other time-based projects taking place at the Armory Center and various sites in Southern California.
