Institute of Contemporary Art Los Angeles
Fund: $20,000
The mission of the Institute of Contemporary Art Los Angeles (ICA LA) is to support art that sparks the pleasure of discovery and challenges the way we see and experience the world, ourselves, and each other. ICA LA is committed to upending hierarchies of race, class, gender, and culture, and to making contemporary art relevant and accessible for all. Through exhibitions, education programs and community partnerships, ICA LA fosters critique of the familiar and empathy with the different. Artists are central to ICA LA’s mission and everything they do. ICA LA gives artists a platform to present their work and to increase points of access and modes of interpretation. Additionally, ICA LA is responsive to the need for free, community-oriented programs that serve diverse urban populations. The museum identifies needs and develops programs through sustained collaboration with a range of partners—local artists and schools, like LAUSD and Para Los Niños, advocacy groups, civic leaders, nonprofits and businesses. From artist-led workshops and bilingual family events to voter registration drives and pop-up bookshops, ICA LA is re-envisioning the role that museums play in historically marginalized neighborhoods.
