Canary Test, fiscally sponsored by Future Roots (dublab), will present Fugue Zones, a forthcoming exhibition at Canary Test that explores the complex relationship between sound as a tool of the military-industrial complex and as a medium of resistance within marginalized communities. The exhibition is a collaboration between artists DeForrest Brown Jr., Jeremy Toussaint-Baptiste, and Dr. Steve Goodman (Kode9), who adapt the musical structure of a fugue—where a central theme is repeated through different instruments—as a framework to layer installation, live performance, and audio technologies to create a new body of work. From military sonic cannons used for crowd control to subwoofers reflective of underground sound system culture, Fugue Zones investigates the dual nature of sound as both a means of control and a tool for cultural reclamation. The exhibition opens on June 21, 2025, and will consist of a sound installation at Canary Test and live performances by the participating artists.
