JOAN

Fund: $40,000

JOAN will present a newly commissioned exhibition carrying/caring the flame by Los Angeles-based artist Roksana Pirouzmand. The project will include a site-specific installation, public programs, and a publication. Pirouzmand’s primary medium is large-scale sculpture, which (sometimes) moves and (often) changes during her exhibitions. This exhibition will deepen her material explorations and collaborations: she will push commonly used materials (clay, water) forward, creating new vocabularies, as well as grow her experimentation with new mediums. Pirouzmand’s sculptural objects, installations, and actions perform in tandem with the artist’s body. Her recent works deal with diasporic memory and forms of care and violence. Relying on metaphor and poetics to complicate representations of trauma and conflict, Pirouzmand’s meditative installations often involve mechanisms (motors, fans, or gravity itself) that animate ceramic sculptures, hair, or pieces of furniture. Forms cast in clay or wax gradually erode through their interaction with natural materials, continuously transforming as they evolve. Additionally, JOAN will produce multiple public programs over the course of the exhibition and a publication with newly commissioned texts and the artist’s drawings.
