Presented by Los Angeles Nomadic Division (LAND) and curated by Christine Y. Kim, the “sister dreamer, lauren halsey’s architectural ode to tha surge n splurge of south central los angeles” will be a living structure that connects past, present, and future, while empowering the community it reflects, South Central Los Angeles. “sister dreamer” will function first as a community gathering space, and second, as precedent for the expansive possibilities of artists working directly in, with, and for their community on a monumental scale. Known for immersive installations that bridge sculpture and architecture, Halsey recontextualizes and reinterprets local vernacular sources such as flyers, murals, signs, and tags—icons of pride, autonomy, initiative, and resilience. Both celebrating Black cultural expressions and archiving them, her work offers a form of creative resistance to the forces of gentrification. In addition to the signs and symbols of contemporary South Central, the artist employs the iconography of ancient Egypt as a means of reclaiming lost legacies. The sculpture park will be open to the public free of cost from Winter 2025 through Spring 2027.
