The Brick will present Kara Walker’s Untitled Stonewall Jackson Project as part of MONUMENTS, a large-scale exhibition organized by The Brick and The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA). MONUMENTS places decommissioned historical monuments alongside pre-existing and newly commissioned works of contemporary art that address the aftermath of the Civil War and the legacy of slavery as it extends to the present moment. During the run of MONUMENTS at MOCA, The Brick is committing the entirety of its gallery space, in complement, to the solo presentation of Kara Walker’s transformative sculptural accomplishment. In December 2021, The Brick acquired an iconic equestrian monument depicting Stonewall Jackson, with its accompanying base, from the city of Charlottesville. MONUMENTS: Kara Walker's Stonewall Jackson Project is a scholarly exploration resulting in her first work in bronze using the monument as material. Building on the visual impact of her life-sized paper silhouette vignettes of the mid-1990s, Walker has completely reimagined Stonewall into a wholly different mythical figure.
