Water cycles through environments, communities, and bodies. Brought together by this movement of water, artists D’Angelo Christian and Kyle Hokona Kootswatewa explore water as both a physical and conceptual entity through which ecological, cultural, and personal relationships can be formed and understood. D’Angelo Christian’s photographs feature landscapes that hold water or bear traces of it. Through his photographic mapping of lakes, clouds, and landscapes carved by water over time, he not only gains an understanding of the spaces he traverses but also constructs an emotional terrain in which water is a medium for memory, identity, and relationship.

Kyle Hokona Kootswatewa’s installation examines water as an interconnected ecological system that sustains and is sustained by life. At the center of the installation is a Sikyátki-period Hopi wild clay water canteen holding water from a Hopi ancestral living spring. Evoking the water cycle’s evaporation, the vessel circulates and transforms the water within it, while its painted exterior depicts living forms sustained by water – and the cultural and natural items surrounding the canteen tell the story of the communities nourished by the spring. 

Water Cycle is the first exhibition in Earth Cycles, a year-long series of exhibitions and programs co-curated and organized by gloria galvez and Liz Goetz, exploring the cycles that sustain life on Earth—and how reconnecting with them may help us respond to the environmental challenges we are facing.
