Human Resources LA will present Labyrinth Gives Way to Skin, a series of public programs over the course of a year—exhibitions, performances, and symposia, often in hybrid combinations—using artist Maryanne Amacher’s work as a point of departure. Although frequently cited as a pioneer of what has come to be called “sound art,” Amacher’s position consistently challenged key assumptions about the capacities and limitations of this art form. Artists including Akio Suzuki & Aki Onda, Jimena Sarno, Jacqueline Kiyomi Gordon, Jeremy Toussaint-Baptiste, Simone Forti, Chiara Giovando, and Dead Thoroughbred (keyon gaskin & sidony o'neal) are invited to address key ideas in Amacher’s work and are encouraged to trace the resonances they find into new formal and conceptual territories. These artists will take up residence using HRLA’s architectural, organizational, and social structures as an instrument, both physically—using the entire building itself as a tool for making (sound or otherwise)—and figuratively—“instrumentalizing” HR's structures to resonate, modulate, filter and amplify signals, gestures, and ideas.
