Armory Center for the Arts

Fund: $26,500

The mission of Armory Center for the Arts is to build on the power of art to transform lives and communities through creating, teaching, and presenting the arts. Formed in 1989, when the Pasadena Art Workshops merged with the Pasadena Gallery of Contemporary Art, the Armory has presented art experiences throughout the City of Pasadena and Greater Los Angeles for over 30 years. Three themes that have been constant throughout the Armory’s history are exhibition of professional artists, their engagement as educators, and leadership in responding to the artistic needs of overlooked and underserved members of the community. The educational philosophy and content of Armory programs have always been based on the role of the artist as educator. All Armory educational programs are designed and led by Teaching Artists who have active creative practices. Their educational programs exist in close dialogue with their exhibitions, which emphasize contemporary artists whose work is socially relevant and often BIPOC-centered.
